VELA AFRICA

ABOUT VELA AFRICA

Who We Are. Why We Exist.

VELA AFRICA is an independent African media company dedicated to discovering, documenting and amplifying remarkable stories about Africans and the work, ideas, contributions and experiences shaping the continent and the wider world.

Across Africa, remarkable things are happening. People are building businesses, advancing science, transforming education, creating new possibilities and making meaningful contributions to society. Yet many of these stories remain relatively unknown or unexplored.

We exist to bring these stories into view. Through thoughtful research, in-depth conversations and compelling visual storytelling, we document the people, ideas and experiences that deserve to be seen, understood and remembered.

The Meaning of VELA

VELA means to appear, to come into sight, to be revealed.

Rooted in the Zulu and Xhosa languages, the name captures the idea at the heart of everything we do: remarkable stories already exist. Our role is to bring them into view.

Stories were already happening. We reveal them.

Pronounced: Veh-lah.

Our Editorial Scope

Africa has no shortage of remarkable stories. Neither does the world.

Our interest extends across disciplines, industries, professions and lived experiences. We look beyond familiar headlines and conventional categories to explore the people and ideas shaping our societies and influencing the world around us.

Our stories may follow:

  • Entrepreneurs and business builders creating businesses, industries and new opportunities.
  • Scientists, researchers and innovators advancing knowledge and developing solutions to important challenges.
  • Educators and professionals transforming their fields and contributing to the development of others.
  • Creatives, artists and cultural contributors shaping ideas, expression and contemporary culture.
  • Community builders and problem solvers responding to challenges and creating meaningful change.
  • People, places and experiences that offer a deeper understanding of society, history and the human experience.

We are interested in stories that reveal something significant about people, their work, their circumstances and the world they inhabit.

How We Tell Stories

We tell stories through two complementary formats, each offering a distinct way to explore people, ideas and experiences.

Documentary Films

We create short and long-form documentaries that bring compelling real-world stories to life. Through in-depth interviews, real environments, observational footage and carefully crafted narratives, we explore the people, ideas and work shaping our world.

Our films are authentic, thoughtful and immersive, bringing audiences closer to the people, ideas and experiences that shape each story.

Studio Interviews

Some stories are best told through conversation. Our studio interviews create space for thoughtful, in-depth exchanges, guided by purposeful questions and intentional visual storytelling.

We create a relaxed, intentional setting where guests can speak openly and share their experiences in their own words. Each conversation is guided by curiosity, thoughtful questions and a genuine interest in the person behind the story.
